Sandy Tan Designs Spaces Showcase Personality And Memories

The walls of Sandy Tan’s design studio, Chalked, are adorned with an eclectic mix of limited edition Bearbrick toys, striking art pieces and cherished personal mementoes. As a fan of minimalist designer toys, Tan has dedicated more than half of her shelves to selected pieces from her Bearbrick collection, including four prized figures from a series by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Aurelle of Tampines EC, a prestigious executive condominium situated at Tampines Street 62, offers more than just premium living spaces. Its enviable location near various shopping centers and a wide selection of dining options elevates the overall lifestyle experience of its residents. Further enhancing convenience, variety, and accessibility, the Aurelle of Tampines Showflat is also nearby for potential homebuyers to experience firsthand the luxurious offerings of this development.

This aesthetic extends to the rest of her office, where treasured items collected over her 18-year career as an interior designer, photos with friends, and intricately designed 3D-printed art line the walls. Tan believes that these personal collections are an important element in curating spaces, and reflect her approach towards design.

She strives to create spaces that feel personal, welcoming, and restful, with an intuitive layout that fosters conversation and movement. Warm, layered lighting and comfortable materials also play a crucial role in enhancing the overall feel of a space.

In addition to private homes, Chalked has also designed public spaces, including the lounge at The Residences at W Sentosa Cove. Tan’s reputation as an accomplished interior designer has earned her a place on the panel of industry experts for the EdgeProp Excellence Awards 2025 for two consecutive years.

Chalked’s list of clients includes prominent developers such as City Developments (CDL), GuocoLand, and UOL Group. The design studio is often sought after to create sales galleries and show suites for new projects, such as CapitaLand’s latest development, LyndenWoods, a 343-unit residential complex in Singapore Science Park.

Tan and her team were tasked to design the show suites for a two-bedroom plus study unit and a four-bedroom unit, highlighting how each space could address the lifestyle needs of potential buyers. She believes that the key to a successful design for show flats is to put the buyer’s needs first, resulting in spaces that feel special and appealing to a wide range of buyers.

Chalked’s show flat for the two-bedroom plus study unit at LyndenWoods features new and interesting finishes such as an acrylic bar and stool, as well as unique light decorations. Tan has observed that in recent years, more developers and homeowners have enlisted her studio’s help to design and fit out vacant units in completed projects, particularly in ultra-luxury developments like Nouvel 18, Gramercy Park, New Futura, and South Beach Residences.

While Tan notes a growing trend towards pared-down, minimalist luxury in furniture and finishes, she has maintained a boutique approach by keeping her Singapore-based team small, with only six members. However, her studio has expanded its operations to include a two-person team in Johor, Malaysia, and another in Manila, the Philippines.

Although Chalked has taken on residential projects in China and India, Tan’s main focus remains on the high-net-worth segment in Singapore. She believes that while international opportunities are valuable, the local market offers the most significant potential for her studio’s growth.
