Blackstone, a leading American alternative investment management company, has announced its plans to acquire AirTrunk, a data centre operator, for a value of A$24 billion. This deal surpasses Blackstone’s previous investment of A$8.9 billion for Australian casino operator Crown Resorts in 2022.

The acquisition will be made in partnership with Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, from current owners Macquarie Asset Management and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board. However, the transaction is subject to approval from the Australian foreign investment review board.

AirTrunk, a data centre operator, has a presence in multiple countries such as Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore, with a committed capacity of over 800 megawatts. Additionally, the company owns land that can support future growth of up to 1 gigawatt across the region.

He emphasizes their focus on investing in data centres, power, and related services.

In a joint statement, Blackstone Infrastructure’s Global Head Sean Klimczak and Global Co-Head of Blackstone Real Estate, Nadeem Meghi, mention that before AirTrunk, their portfolio consisted of US$55 billion worth of data centres, including those under construction and prospective pipeline development of over US$70 billion.

AirTrunk’s founder and CEO, Robin Khuda, welcomes the acquisition and the support it will bring from Blackstone and CPP Investments in terms of capital, sector expertise, and networks in various local markets. He believes this will aid in the company’s continued expansion.
